Cricket World Cup
The recent Cricket World Cup was an absolute pleasure to watch (unless you are an Englishman, of course). Records were smashed at an astonishing rate, it seemed like every game a record had gone. We have never seen batting like it.
The final was a little bit of a let down, with Australia having home advantage over the Kiwi’s. However, Australia were worthy winners and are looking like the side that dominated cricket in the late 90s and early 00s. Their batting line-up dominated teams and their bowlers, particularly Mitchell Starc (player of the tournament) and Mitchell Johnson. They frightened the life out of opposing batsmen and were just as dominant as the batsmen.
The Kiwi’s were only slightly less brilliant. Home soil helped but they have turned into a truly wonderful one-day side. McCullum et al should be very proud of themselves and will be a force to be reckoned with in the near future.
South Africa again failed at the World Cup. With such an incredible team it is surprising they weren’t in the final. The Proteus have individuals that strike fear in other teams and it’s surely only a matter of time before they dominate a world cup like the Aussie’s.
England on the other hand were poor, very, very poor. Abysmal in fact. They are nowhere near a title challenging side and the team seemed in total disarray. The whole system needs a huge overhaul and the Kevin Pietersen debacle is so embarrassing. It just would not happen with any other team in world cricket. I hope the governing body sorts themselves out before we get so far behind everyone else that it’s impossible to make up the ground.
The World Cup was thoroughly enjoyable, can’t believe I have to wait for four years until the next one! D’oh!
